Fact Check: The NFL has NOT fired three referees over a bribery scheme. Reports of such actions are false and lack any credible evidence. Always verify claims with official sources.

Posted on December 19, 2024 By truong truong

Did the NFL abruptly fire three referees who officiated the game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Rams for their involvement in the largest bribery scheme in NFL history? No, that’s not true: There is no evidence that the NFL fired any referees amid a bribery scandal following a game between the two California teams as of publication date. There are no news reports about referees getting fired, which would have been national news.

The claim appeared in a post (archived here) on Facebook on December 16, 2024. It said:

The post did not cite any sources for its claim. The first comment on the post included a link to a website (archived here) that expanded on the claim that the referees were fired. The article began:

In a shocking development, the NFL has announced the abrupt dismissal of three referees who officiated the high-stakes game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Rams. The officials are reportedly implicated in what is being described as the largest bribery scheme in the league’s history.

There were quotes in the article from an unnamed NFL spokesperson that said:

‘The integrity of the game is our top priority,’ an NFL spokesperson stated. ‘These actions are unacceptable, and we are taking immediate steps to address this issue.’

A search of the NFL website (archived here) did not return any instances of that quote, nor announcements of three referees being fired as of publication date.

Lead Stories searched key phrases on Google including, “The integrity of the game is our top priority” (archived here) and “These actions are unacceptable, and we are taking immediate steps to address this issue” (archived here). The searches turned up multiple copies of the bogus claim across social media platforms but found no instances of those quotes being used by officials announcing a referee scandal.

Lead Stories reached out to the NFL for comment and will update the story when a response is received.

  • The entire Ford Field stadium in Detroit fell silent as Bruce Springsteen lowered his microphone mid-song, his sharp eyes locking onto a weathered sign held high in the front row: “I got into Stanford. You said we’d sing together.” The crowd held its breath as a young woman stepped onto the stage — Lily Tran, once an orphan in foster care, now a full-scholarship student at Stanford University, one of the most prestigious institutions in America. At just 9 years old, Lily had met Bruce Springsteen during a backstage meet-and-greet. Back then, she had told him her dream: to escape hardship through education and music. Bruce Springsteen bent down, flashed his iconic grin, and told her: “When you get into college, if I’m still out here singing, we’ll do a song together.” Today, she kept her promise. And so did he. The two performed an emotional duet of Springsteen’s timeless ballad song, “Born to Run”. At first, Lily’s voice trembled as she sang the lines he had given her, but with every note, her confidence grew — as if every memory, every struggle, and every hope she had carried poured straight into the melody. The arena, usually roaring with energy, fell silent — only to explode moments later with cheers, tears, and thunderous applause. As the final note faded, Bruce Springsteen leaned down and whispered into her ear: “You didn’t just keep your promise… you reminded me to keep mine.” The entire audience rose to their feet, applauding with all their hearts — not just for a performance, but for something far more rare: a moment that rose above music itself, becoming hope, resilience, and a promise fulfilled.
