BREAKING: The coach who played a key role in helping Aaron Rodgers secure his last two MVP awards has returned to the Green Bay Packers!

Green Bay Packers quarterbacks coach Luke Getsy talks to Aaron Rodgers (12) against the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium.

Luke Getsy was an instrumental part of the inaugural Matt LaFleur’s coaching staff with the Green Bay Packers. After three failed seasons elsewhere, he’s back in Wisconsin.

On Friday, he was spotted at practice. Later, Matt LaFleur confirmed that he has been working with the staff as a defensive consultant.

“This is the first week he’s been here, but he’s been working with us similar to how (Robert) Saleh is working with the offense, (Getsy) is working with the defense,” LaFleur said. “It’s good to have him back around. He’s known as the mayor around here, he has a lot of long-lasting relationships with a lot of people in the building. It’s just a positive guy to be around. It’s been good.”

First, Luke Getsy worked with the Packers under Mike McCarthy between 2014 and 2017, as offensive quality control and wide receivers coach. After a season with Mississippi State as offensive coordinator and WRs coach, he returned to the Packers in 2019 under LaFleur to coach quarterbacks.

His work was so good that he was promoted to passing game coordinator alongside the QB coach position. Over the following two seasons, Aaron Rodgers won the MVP award twice.

That led to opportunities as an offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears in 2022 and 2023 and with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2024. He was not as successful and ended up being fired midseason in each of the last two years — certainly, it didn’t help that his quarterbacks were Justin Fields and Gardner Minshew.

Now, while he awaits for a new full-time opportunity, he’s back with the Packers to offer the defensive coaches an offensive point of view.

“It’s always great to have a different perspective, maybe something that you haven’t seen,” LaFleur added. “I’ve worked with him previously, so just got a lot of trust in the guy and really value his perspective.”

The Packers are getting close to playoff time, and another coaching mind may be a useful tool at the perfect time.
