At the 2026 American Music Honors, Bruce Springsteen delivered a memorable tribute performance alongside John Densmore, Steve Van Zandt, and the Disciples of Soul, taking on “Light My Fire” by The Doors.

Held on April 18 at Monmouth University and organized by the Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music, the event brought together icons across generations. Taking the stage, Springsteen set the tone with a self-aware remark: “There is no one in the room in danger of filling Jim Morrison’s leather pants tonight,” he said, prompting laughter from the crowd. Still, he added that the band “will do what we can,” before launching into a soaring performance capped by a Morrison-inspired howl.

A Classic Revisited, A Legacy Remembered

Originally written by Robby Krieger and released in 1967, “Light My Fire” became one of The Doors’ defining hits, spending three weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100. Today, Densmore and Krieger remain the last surviving members of the band’s classic lineup, lending additional weight to the tribute.

Earlier in the evening, Densmore reflected on a personal connection between Springsteen and the band, recalling a 1986 Doors show in Asbury Park attended by Springsteen and Patti Scialfa. “The Doors played in Asbury Park, and guess who was in the audience — the Boss!” he said. He continued with a playful nod to the couple’s enduring relationship:

“Hey, if our music helped Bruce shout out his bride, I’m hip. It apparently worked. They’ve been together quite a while. You know, so long that maybe Patti’s the Boss.”

A Night of Honors and High-Energy Performances

Springsteen’s appearance came during a brief pause in his ongoing Land of Hope and Dreams Tour, with his most recent stop taking place on April 16 in Phoenix, Arizona.

The ceremony also recognized a diverse group of influential artists, including Dr. Dre, Dionne Warwick, Patti Smith, The Doors, The Band, and the E Street Band.

Elsewhere, Public Enemy’s Chuck D and Flavor Flav ignited the venue with a triumphant performance of Fight the Power. From the front row, Springsteen was seen “pumping his fist,” underscoring the communal, celebratory spirit that defined the evening.

In recent months, the singer has made his distaste for the current administration known, calling it a “corrupt, incompetent, racist, reckless, and treasonous administration.” Former E Street Band drummer Vini “Mad Dog” Lopez is tired of it.
