Austin, TX — Amid the devastation left by the historic Texas floods this month, one man’s extraordinary bravery — and another man’s extraordinary generosity — have captured the nation’s heart.
Country music legend George Strait, known as The King of Country, announced he will personally award $1 million to Coast Guard officer Scott Ruskan, who risked his own life to save 165 people during the deadly floods that tore through the Hill Country earlier this month.
The floods, among the worst in Texas history, claimed at least 78 lives and displaced thousands after relentless rains turned rivers and creeks into walls of water. Amid the chaos, Ruskan piloted rescue missions for over 48 straight hours, pulling stranded families, children, and elderly residents from rooftops, trees, and submerged vehicles.
A Hero Emerges

Ruskan, a senior petty officer stationed in Galveston, was deployed to Kerrville just hours after flash floods submerged much of the area. According to witnesses and his commanding officer, Ruskan refused to rest, volunteering for one mission after another, often in treacherous conditions, as water levels and currents worsened.
By the end of his second day, he had rescued 165 people, many of them children, and was later hospitalized briefly for exhaustion.
“I was just doing my job,” Ruskan said in a statement. “There were families counting on us. That’s all that mattered.”
The King of Country Steps In

George Strait, a lifelong Texan who himself has been on the ground supporting flood victims in Kerrville, said he was deeply moved when he learned about Ruskan’s actions.
“This young man put his life on the line for strangers,” Strait said. “He reminded us all what it means to be part of a community — to stand up when people need you most. That kind of courage deserves more than a pat on the back.”
On Tuesday, Strait announced he would personally award $1 million to Ruskan as a token of gratitude — and as a way to inspire others to step up in times of crisis.
“We can’t bring back those we lost,” Strait said. “But we can honor those who fought to save lives and remind everyone that even in tragedy, heroes walk among us.”
Fans React: ‘That’s Why He’s The King’

News of Strait’s gesture quickly spread across social media, with fans praising both him and Ruskan for their humility and humanity.
-
“George Strait just proved, once again, that he’s a true Texan — and a true king.”
-
“Scott Ruskan is a hero. George Strait is a class act. Texas needed this story.”
-
“Two men showing the best of what this state stands for: bravery and kindness.”
Even Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a statement commending both men:
“Scott Ruskan’s bravery and George Strait’s generosity remind us all that Texas is strongest when we stand together.”
A Legacy of Giving
For decades, Strait has supported disaster relief efforts, children’s hospitals, and military families through his Jennifer Lynn Strait Foundation and personal donations. This gesture, however, may be his most personal yet — coming just days after he visited shelters in Kerrville and helped distribute aid to flood victims.
“This isn’t about me,” Strait added. “It’s about shining a light on the people who quietly risk everything for the rest of us.”
Conclusion: Hope Amid Heartbreak
For a state still mourning its losses, the story of Ruskan’s heroism and Strait’s generosity has given many Texans a reason to smile — and a reason to believe in the goodness of their neighbors.
“You don’t expect to be called a hero,” Ruskan said quietly. “But if my story reminds people to help each other, that’s worth more than anything.”
Thanks to the King of Country, that story — and that spirit — will not soon be forgotten.
