Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo brought high fashion and powerful emotions to the Mexico City premiere of Wicked, capturing hearts and attention with their striking looks and heartfelt stories. Grande swapped her signature “Galinda pink” for a daring, iridescent Versace gown, while Erivo channeled her character, Elphaba, in a bold black Tom Brown ensemble complete with sculpted witch hands. The two stars, alongside co-star Jonathan Bailey, arrived to a warm welcome, with fans applauding their on-screen sisterhood.
In an exclusive interview, Grande reflected on a 2011 tweet where she had wished to play Galinda, calling her casting a “manifestation” come true after years of hard work. Grande’s pride was especially poignant as she revealed she’d honored her father, Edward Butera, in the film credits, marking a touching reconciliation after years of estrangement.
Erivo, meanwhile, shared the deeper connection she felt with her character, Elphaba, who longs for acceptance despite being different. The role, she said, allowed her to embrace her own journey as an outsider. “I know what it’s like to feel you don’t fit,” Erivo shared, expressing her hope that Elphaba’s story would offer comfort to those who feel the same.
Both actresses, who’ve spent three years bringing Wicked to life, spoke of their close bond and even matching tattoos to commemorate the journey. The musical adaptation hits theaters on November 22, promising fans not only a spectacular visual experience but an emotional journey shared by two powerhouse actresses.
